Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
This organization enlists volunteer physicians to provide free health care to the southern Haitian village of Thiotte. The group particularly needs family physicians, ob-gyns and pediatricians to treat patients in its clinic. Trips typically last 10 days. The village of Thiotte has a population of approximately 25,000 people, and an additional 20,000 people live within a 10 mile radius of the village in the surrounding countryside. We typically stay in Thiotte for seven days, during which we are the guests of Father Gaston at the Sacred Coeur Parish. The church complex becomes our base camp while we are in Thiotte, and is conveniently just across the road from the clinic. All of our meals are made by the rectory staff, and the living quarters are within this complex as well. The church courtyard is a busy meeting ground for adults, and playground for children who provide us with countless hours of entertainment after the clinic closes for the day. Simply said, we provide free health care to the people of Thiotte, and the surrounding area. In reality, the smooth execution of a mission like this is only made possible by the extraordinary people who make up the mission trips. In the United States, there is a physician for every 400-500 people. In Thiotte, there are typically only two Cuban medical residents to care for the 25,000 people in the village, and 20,000 others in the surrounding countryside. While these doctors are well respected, they have little access to medications to prescribe, and most people cannot afford to see them.
